A Black Moon occurs when there are two New Moons in a single month. Normally, each season has three new moons, but the lunar cycle doesn't line up perfectly with our calendar. So, sometimes an extra new moon sneaks in and the third in that sequence is called a Black Moon. They are kind of rare, seasonal Black Moons, like the one on Aug. 23, happen only about once every 33 months so it will be a cool celestial treat!

Unlike a supermoon or lunar eclipse, a dark moon, or black moon isn't something you can see. During the new moon phase, the moon is positioned between Earth and the sun, so its unlit side faces us, rendering it invisible against the bright sky. A Dark Moon occurs about two days before the New Moon when the Moon is not observable and the night sky is totally dark.

A New Moon is the START of a new lunar cycle and is marked by the appearance of the thinnest crescent appearing in the night sky.

It's time for dark moon magic! Since they are so rare, black moons are a unique and magical time. It marks a lunar phase of complete darkness and an energetic void filled with possibility. It represents a potent time for reflection, setting intentions, and bringing our desires into reality. The dark moon is energetically perfect for Releasing and Banishing. It's a time for letting go of negativity, releasing past traumas, and banishing unwanted habits or situations. It is a great time for shadow work, which involves exploring and integrating the parts of oneself that are often hidden or repressed. A time for rituals to release negativity, and cleanse your space of energetic clutter. You can use this time to connect with spirits or ancestors, seeking guidance and wisdom about releasing what no longer serves, whether it's a negative thought pattern, a toxic relationship, or a stagnant situation. It's the perfect time for introspection, self-reflection, and preparing for the new lunar cycle by setting intentions, taking action, and cultivating what you want to manifest in the upcoming waxing moon cycle.

We generally use the waning moon, to send things away, like the moon itself is shrinking away to the darkness. It's symbolic of removing and banishing, as the moon goes away and energetically, it is a time of pushing out and discarding. You do not necessarily have to do these types of rituals in a specific moon phase, they will work any time, but it does tend to add some power to your casting! Black moons are intensified new moons so the energy is increased and your magic will be stronger!

So get your Selenite and black moonstone ready for this awesome Black moon coming on August 23!

Happy casting, Magical ones!
